India's automobile retail industry reached a significant milestone in FY26, with total vehicle registrations hitting 2,96,71,064 units, indicating a strong 13.30% growth compared to the previous year, as reported by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). The sector is approaching the noteworthy 3 crore yearly sales threshold, emphasizing robust and widespread demand across various segments. This growth has been fundamentally fueled by enhanced affordability, increasing mobility demands in both urban and rural areas, and a varied mix of powertrains. Rural demand kept closing the gap with urban markets, bolstered by improved cash flows and positive economic conditions, as urban demand stayed strong.
By segment, two-wheelers drove the recovery, exceeding pre-COVID figures with sales reaching over 2.14 crore units, increasing by 13.40%. Passenger cars surpassed the 47-lakh milestone for the first time, showing a 13% increase, fueled by new releases, urban development, and a growing inclination towards SUVs and alternative fuel vehicles. Tractors excelled as a leading performer, surpassing 10 lakh units with an 18.95% increase, supported by robust agricultural incomes and a beneficial monsoon. Commercial vehicles achieved unprecedented levels, surpassing 10 lakh units with an 11.74% increase, buoyed by infrastructure endeavours, whereas three-wheelers noted an 11.68% increase due to the growing adoption of electric vehicles. Yet, the construction machinery sector fell by 11.70% because of deferred projects and a significant base effect.
