India's copper demand increased by 9.3% year-on-year to 1,878 kilo tonnes (KT) in FY25, fueled by strong economic growth and rising usage in essential sectors, as per the latest report from the International Copper Association (ICA). Demand measured 1,718 KT in FY24. The report credited this increase to the growth of infrastructure, construction, renewable energy, and consumer goods sectors, emphasizing copper's essential part in India's clean energy and industrial change. The construction of buildings and infrastructure sectors saw growth rates of 11% and 17%, respectively. In contrast, the consumer durables sector jumped 19% thanks to increased sales of air conditioners, fans, and various appliances. Mr. Mayur Karmarkar, Managing Director of ICA India, stated that the demand for copper demonstrates India's industrial growth and its policy emphasis on renewable energy, sustainable transportation, and infrastructure development. He stressed the importance of India enhancing local supply chains and building efficient copper reserves to achieve the Viksit Bharat @2047 goal. He emphasized that improving local copper production and encouraging import substitution will be crucial for maintaining growth and securing long-term stability in India's industrial environment.
