India's domestic defence manufacturing has grown significantly, with output hitting a historic Rs. 1,27,434 crore (US$14.36 billion) in FY24, backed by the Atmanirbhar Bharat program and ongoing policy reforms. Increasing budget allocations, such as the rise from Rs. 2,53,000 crore (US$28.51 billion) in the fiscal year 2014 to Rs. 6,81,000 crore (US$76.74 billion) in FY26, indicate an ongoing dedication to enhancing military strength. Improved business operations, relaxed Foreign Direct Investment regulations, and organised initiatives like the Research, Development and Innovation Scheme valued at Rs. 1,00,000 crore (US$11.2 billion) have boosted involvement from both public and private sector industries. The Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020 and the Defence Procurement Manual 2025 have simplified procurement, emphasised local systems, and fostered partnerships with start-ups, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, and educational institutions. Defence Industrial Corridors in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have increased investment even more. Simultaneously, organisations like the Defence Research and Development Organisation are enhancing India’s design and innovation landscape.
India's defence exports have also improved, increasing to Rs. 23,622 crore (US$2.66 billion) in FY25, propelled by streamlined export regulations, a completely digital authorisation process, and broader worldwide acceptance of Indian platforms. Increased involvement of the private sector, shown by its larger share of exports, combined with a rise in contract awards to local firms, has strengthened India's role as a dependable partner in defence supply chains. With India aiming for defence production worth Rs. 3,00,000 crore (US$33.81 billion) with exports totalling Rs. 2029, 50,000 crore (US$5.63 billion) is being targeted, as ongoing reforms, technological integration, and capacity growth are fostering a contemporary, self-sufficient defence environment.
