India’s FTA Expansion: Boosting MSME Global Trade
India’s expanding network of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) is opening new avenues for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to access key international markets, boost price competitiveness, and integrate into global supply chains. Recent trade deals with key partners—including the UK, EU, Australia, and New Zealand—aim to reduce tariff barriers and level the playing field against regional competitors in Vietnam and Bangladesh. Labor-intensive industries such as textiles, leather, footwear, engineering goods, chemicals, and gems and jewelry stand to gain significant preferential access, with early trade data already showing strong export growth to FTA partners like Singapore and Sri Lanka in Q1 FY2026-27.
Beyond immediate duty reductions, these FTAs encourage domestic MSMEs to upgrade product quality, adopt modern technologies, and meet stringent international standards and certifications. By helping small businesses navigate preferential tariff structures and rules of origin, industry outreach programs are enabling domestic suppliers to connect directly with global buyers. Ultimately, this strategic trade approach aims to diversify India's export destinations, strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities, and secure a higher share of high-value global trade.
