India's second-hand car market grew to 5.9 million units in FY25 and is expected to advance at a 10% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), reaching 9.5 million units by 2030, as reported in the seventh edition of the Indian Blue Book by Mahindra First Choice and Volkswagen Certified Pre-Owned. The report credits this expansion to heightened aspirations, growing demand for Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs), and a swift transition to structured competitors. SUVs and compact SUVs now make up more than 50% of the used car market, increasing from 23% four years ago, as average prices rose 36% due to buyers opting for newer, safer vehicles. Vehicles between four to seven years old now lead organised sales at 30%, with non-metro markets developing into significant growth centers. Customer loyalty and trust are increasing, with 70% of consumers favoring authorized dealers for their transparency and verified products.
The report indicates that warranty coverage affects 66% of buying choices, showing changing consumer expectations. Artificial intelligence (AI) and digital tools, now utilized in merely 6% of sales, are anticipated to gain broader acceptance. Exchange programs at new car dealerships now account for 41% of supply, bolstered by Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)-certified channels. Thanks to the vehicle scrappage policy generating new supply channels, India's used car market is transitioning from being fragmented and focused on affordability to becoming aspirational, formalized, and digitally enhanced.
