India’s telecommunications industry has achieved a significant milestone with 365 million 5G subscribers by July 2025, indicating a 35.00% adoption rate within three years of the technology's introduction. As per India Ratings and Research (Ind-Ra), the swift uptake of 5G has greatly transformed consumer data usage trends, with monthly consumption currently averaging 18-55 GB, an increase from 6-11 GB in 2018-19. The increase highlights the shifting patterns of Indian users, as all three main private telecom companies have consistently reported quarterly growth since the launch of 5G. Broadband services have expanded quickly, gaining more than 4.20 million subscribers in June and July 2025, surpassing the total industry subscriber increase of 1-2.50 million for that timeframe. This momentum drove broadband penetration to 80.10% by July 2025, up from 77.30% the previous year.
Despite tariff increases implemented by many providers in mid-2024, India's total wireless and wired subscriber count grew to 1.22 billion in July 2025 from 1.20 billion the previous year. The wireless user base stayed constant year-over-year at 1.172 billion, although there has been consistent monthly growth since December 2024. Within the leading trio of companies, subscriber growth at Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel balanced out the declines at Vodafone Idea. Active subscribers, determined by visitor location logs, rose 2% year-over-year to exceed 1.08 billion, boosting the active user percentage to 93.10% from 90.60% the prior year. Ind-Ra observed that this enhancement was principally propelled by a 5.80% YoY increase in active subscribers at Reliance Jio and 1.30% at Bharti Airtel, outweighing the drop in Vodafone Idea’s subscriber base.
