India Unveils Semicon 2.0 at SEMICON 2026

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 on September 17 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, initiating a three-day global summit organized by the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), MeitY, and SEMI. Under the theme "Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem," the conference brought together policymakers, investors, global chipmakers, academics, and startups to showcase India’s capabilities across the end-to-end semiconductor value chain. Spanning 15,000 square meters, the event featured over 600 exhibitors—including 300 international entities—alongside six country pavilions, 12 state pavilions, a dedicated Startup Pavilion, a Workforce Development Pavilion, and a Student Hackathon. The conference highlighted India's key policy milestones, including 12 approved semiconductor projects under the original program—with three already in commercial production—and the newly sanctioned Semicon 2.0 framework designed to accelerate ecosystem expansion. Government initiatives have provided free Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools to over 400 universities and 105 startups, while approving 24 startups under the Design Linked Incentive (DLI) scheme. These domestic efforts position India to capitalize on massive industry tailwinds, as the global semiconductor market is projected to expand from $796 billion (₹75.13 lakh crore) in 2025 to over $2 trillion (₹188.76 lakh crore) by 2030, with India's domestic chip demand expected to more than double from $50 billion (₹4.72 lakh crore) to $103 billion (₹9.72 lakh crore) over the same period.
