Indian Auto Sales Surge Led by 36.5% Passenger Vehicle Jump

According to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), India's total vehicle production exceeded 31.57 lakh units in August 2026. Domestic passenger vehicle sales experienced a sharp year-on-year surge of 36.5%, reaching 4,39,309 units compared to 3,21,901 units in August 2025. The two-wheeler segment expanded by 10.5% to 20,34,698 units, propelled by a 23.8% jump in scooter sales to 8,55,715 units, while motorcycle sales saw a modest 2.4% rise to 11,33,047 units. Three-wheeler sales climbed 22.8% to 93,764 units, driven by gains in passenger carriers (up 22.4% to 78,680 units) and goods carriers (up 34.9% to 13,320 units). Conversely, electric micro-mobility segments contracted, with e-rickshaw sales dropping 6% to 1,264 units and e-cart sales falling 38.3% to 500 units. SIAM Director General Rajesh Menon highlighted that passenger vehicles, three-wheelers, and two-wheelers all achieved their highest-ever August sales volumes in 2026. While acknowledging that the steep percentage gains were partly aided by a favorable low base from the prior year, Mr. Menon emphasized that the auto industry is experiencing a robust growth trajectory. He noted that strong consumer confidence, buoyant rural demand, favorable financing terms, and expanding adoption of alternative drivetrains are establishing a healthy ecosystem across categories, with upcoming festive demand expected to further bolster second-quarter performance.
