Indian Banks Hit Historic Low NPAs, Shift to Growth Reforms

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced at the PSB Confluence 2026 that non-performing assets (NPAs) across India’s banking sector have plunged to historic lows. This balance sheet turnaround, following an extensive clean-up process, has restored industry credibility and enabled public sector lenders to transition from defensive crisis management to proactive structural reforms. Backed by research from the Department of Financial Services (DFS), the two-day event focuses on aligning bank strategies with critical demographic trends—particularly India’s youth population, which comprises nearly 29% of the nation in the 15–29 age bracket. The confluence centers on seven key operational themes: deposit mobilization, youth-targeted banking, supporting the national investment cycle, backing Global Capability Centers (GCCs), expanding agricultural infrastructure, refining priority sector lending, and modernizing credit card ecosystems. These actionable strategies will directly inform a high-powered government committee tasked with defining the banking sector's role in the broader Viksit Bharat roadmap. By demanding practical, banker-led execution, the government aims to establish a resilient financial framework aligned with India's long-term economic growth targets.
