Indian Railways is advancing its safety efforts with Kavach, a domestically developed automatic train protection system enhanced by cutting-edge AI technology for monitoring. The system enables real-time safety and collision avoidance, significantly decreasing severe train accidents and lowering their occurrence. Kavach has been deployed on 2,200 route kilometres, while Kavach 4.0 has been implemented on more than 1,300 route kilometres in five zones in India, with development efforts ongoing on major routes like Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah. Thus, a distinct dedication to creating and enhancing safety infrastructure. Looking ahead, Kavach 5.0 is planned, which will be incorporated with Vande Bharat 4.0 to enhance speeds and capacity while maintaining Kavach tackles the limitations and challenges of conventional, human-centred signalling by overseeing and tracking a train's location, speed, and controlling authority, thereby helping to avert Signal Passing at Danger (SPADs), excessive speeds, and potential collisions. Moreover, Kavach guarantees improved crew awareness by showcasing target speed and distance covered. In addition to Kavach, AI-based detection of wildlife corridor intrusions and predictive maintenance remain essential and enhance its functionalities. This digital initiative further comprises AI surveillance, video analytics, and communications, integral to Indian Railways’ goal of establishing a more secure and technology-driven railway system.
