On August 31, 2025, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and Chinese President Mr. Xi Jinping concurred that the economies of India and China can contribute to stability in global trade during the current US trade war. During the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, the leaders emphasized the importance of approaching bilateral trade and investment strategically, while also ensuring a reduction in the trade deficit. Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi compared border peace to an “insurance policy” for relations, whereas Chinese President Mr. Xi Jinping stated that interactions should not be characterized only by boundary matters. Both leaders emphasized that India and China are partners with more agreement than disagreements, and that conflicts should be prevented. India’s Foreign Secretary Mr. Vikram Misri noted that the leaders recognized a chance to “capitalize” on the global tariff landscape to enhance trade relations, as direct flights between the two countries are expected to restart shortly. Chinese President Mr. Xi Jinping proposed four measures to enhance relations: improving communication, increasing collaboration, addressing mutual concerns, and reinforcing multilateral cooperation. He urged both nations to uphold fairness, justice, and multilateralism, highlighting the SCO’s importance in opposing US-imposed tariffs. Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi highlighted that India and China, both seeking strategic independence, must not allow external nations to influence their relationship. He also engaged with Mr. Cai Qi, a member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China, to seek backing for enhanced relations. The leaders acknowledged consistent advancements since their meeting in Kazan in October 2024.
