On September 11, 2025, during the State Review Meeting on Renewable Energy, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Mr. Pralhad Joshi announced that the government has broadened the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) initiative to cover solar cells, with intentions to include ingots and polysilicon in the future. The ALMM program has successfully facilitated over 100 Gigawatt (GW) of solar module capacity produced domestically, and analogous initiatives are currently being considered for solar cells, ingots, and polysilicon. He emphasized the Rs. 24,000 crore (US$ 2.72 billion) Production Linked Incentive (PLI) program for solar modules, which has drawn total investments of Rs. 50,000 crore (US$ 5.66 billion), enhancing domestic production. He observed that India's manufacturing capacity for solar equipment has risen from 2.4 GW in 2013 to 130 GW now, and wind power capacity has expanded from 21 GW to 52 GW. He further stated that India's installed capacity for power generation from non-fossil sources has hit 250 GW, with a government objective of achieving 500 GW in the next five years. Substantial advancements have occurred in rooftop solar, and with the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY), installations are projected to increase from 20 lakh to 50 lakh in a month through a new utility-driven model. He encouraged states to tackle major obstacles to solar sector development, such as land accessibility and approvals, Right of Way (RoW) challenges, and postponements in finalizing power purchase agreements (PPAs) by distribution firms, to aid in further capacity generation and bolster India’s renewable energy growth.
