Pharma Machtech 2026: India’s Healthcare & FTA Vision

Addressing the Pharma Machtech and Labnext Expo 2026 in New Delhi, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal called for India to leverage its status as the "pharmacy of the world" to establish itself as a comprehensive global medical destination. He emphasized that the sector must broaden its focus beyond traditional therapeutics to encompass wellness, diagnostics, medical technology, digital health, and R&D. Urging industry leaders to take full advantage of India’s expanding trade network, Mr. Goyal noted that pre-2014 Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) covered economies with a combined GDP of around ₹954.40 lakh crore ($10 trillion). In contrast, nine recently finalized FTAs provide access to a market of approximately ₹5,726.40 lakh crore ($60 trillion), with ongoing trade negotiations set to elevate this coverage to around ₹7,158 lakh crore ($75 trillion). Highlighting the sector's economic potential, Mr. Goyal stated that the healthcare and medtech ecosystem could generate millions of jobs and catalyze vast startup activity. To boost self-reliance and technological independence, he urged the strengthening of incubation networks, intellectual property frameworks, and global innovation partnerships. The Minister pointed to government policy measures—including revised GST structures to improve healthcare affordability, 100% FDI under the automatic route, and a ₹1 lakh crore ($10.48 billion) R&D allocation—as key drivers supporting the domestic pharma industry's strategic pivot from volume to high-value output. Reinforcing the need for resilient healthcare supply chains post-pandemic, he expressed confidence that synergistic efforts across research and industry will significantly advance India’s broader Viksit Bharat 2047 goals.
