Reserve Bank of India (RBI) unveils three consumer-focused initiatives to promote financial inclusion

Mr. Sanjay Malhotra, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), revealed three consumer-oriented initiatives to enhance financial inclusion following the August Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting. He stressed that the well-being of citizens, particularly those at the bottom of the pyramid, continues to be a priority for the RBI. In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), banks will organize camps at the Panchayat level from July 1 until September 30, 2025. These camps will offer doorstep re-Know Your Customer (KYC) services, establish new bank accounts, and encourage microfinance and pension programs, while also resolving customer complaints. The RBI aims to simplify the settlement process for bank accounts and locker contents after a customer’s death by standardizing procedures among banks. This initiative will establish consistent timelines and streamlined paperwork to facilitate the claims process for families. Additionally, the central bank plans to enhance its Retail Direct platform by facilitating Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) for treasury bills. Introduced in 2021, this platform enables individual investors to buy government securities directly. The inclusion of SIPs is anticipated to motivate small investors to consistently invest in short-term government debt, increasing retail engagement in the sovereign securities market while promoting financial discipline via automated investment
