Scindia Unveils India's Telecom & Electronics Surge

Addressing the Indian Foundation for Quality Management (IFQM) Symposium 2026 in New Delhi, Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated that while India followed global trends during the 4G era and matched international momentum in 5G, the nation is positioned to lead global developments in 6G technology. Highlighting a major structural transition in trade, Minister Scindia emphasized that India has evolved from a net importer of telecom equipment into a net exporter. This shift is being reinforced by significant semiconductor infrastructure expansion, with eight to nine semiconductor fabrication plants currently under development across the country, including a milestone facility in the North-Eastern region. Underlining the dramatic expansion of domestic electronics manufacturing, the Minister revealed that mobile phone production in India surged from approximately ₹2 lakh crore ($27.32 billion) in 2020 to ₹6.27 lakh crore ($66.03 billion) today, with 100% of mobile phones consumed domestically now manufactured within the country. As the world’s second-largest mobile telecom market supporting 1.35 billion mobile connections, India's rapid manufacturing scaling reflects the expanding depth and maturity of its domestic telecommunications, semiconductor, and electronics manufacturing ecosystems over recent years.
