Textile industry emerging as a national asset: Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi emphasizes achievement in 124th 'Mann Ki Baat'

In his recent Mann Ki Baat speech, Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi connected the inception of National Handloom Day, observed every year on August 7, to the 1905 Swadeshi movement, describing it as a crucial milestone in India's quest for self-reliance. With 2024 celebrating the 10th anniversary of National Handloom Day, he emphasized the significant influence of the textile industry on the economy and society, similar to Khadi's role during the freedom movement. He showcased motivating instances of modernization and empowerment in rural India, including Ms. Kavita Dhawale from Maharashtra, who moved from having few resources to marketing her own handwoven Paithani sarees, as well as tribal women in Odisha who rejuvenated the Santhali saree, creating reliable incomes. He also recounted the tale of Mr. Naveen Kumar’s family from Nalanda, Bihar, which has updated its conventional handloom practices and now partners with prominent brands, showing how heritage and creativity can coexist to drive progress. He highlighted that the textile and apparel industry, among India's most culturally varied fields, is experiencing strong growth thanks to contributions from diverse groups: rural women, city designers, older weavers, and tech-oriented youth starting businesses. More than 3,000 textile startups are now active, enhancing India's handloom reputation worldwide. Describing the sector as a fundamental aspect of Atmanirbhar Bharat, he encouraged the public to be "vocal for local" by focusing on products made in India. He stated that self-sufficiency and local innovation are essential for realizing India’s 2047 development goals. National Handloom Day celebrates weavers while also highlighting the sector's cultural and economic significance in fostering a robust, inclusive economy.
