The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) is launching a significant effort to grow the distribution network for mutual funds in the country, in partnership with India Post. According to The Times of India on August 20, the initiative aims to train approximately one lakh postmen to serve as mutual fund distributors, thereby transforming each district in chosen states into a center for financial inclusion. The program will primarily concentrate on Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Meghalaya, aiming to onboard 20,000 new distributors in the first year. By year’s end, the goal is to guarantee each district has a minimum of 10 trained distributors, with a long-term purpose of increasing this figure to 20 per district. The project involves collaborations with educational institutions to establish a train-the-trainers approach, enhancing local capabilities and fortifying the overall distribution system. Moreover, the partnership tackles Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements for persons lacking Aadhaar numbers, promoting greater involvement. At present, around 45% of mutual fund investments come from smaller towns. In contrast, the leading 30 cities account for 65%, indicating considerable unexploited potential in rural and semi-urban regions. Although there are 30,000 new distributors each year, the net increase is only about 10,000, highlighting the necessity for stronger distribution initiatives. The mutual fund industry has expanded swiftly in recent years, with folios increasing from 2.1 crore in 2019 to 5.6 crore now, and AMFI plans to double this number in the near future. With 800 million bank accounts in India and assets under management now at 21% of GDP, as opposed to over 100% in developed nations, the initiative may enhance financial inclusion and engagement in the mutual fund sector, turning it into a crucial factor for domestic savings and investment
