The digital transformation of India's power distribution sector is accelerating with the increased deployment of smart meters. Power Minister Manohar Lal reported that India currently has 49.3 million smart meters in use. This signifies a crucial advancement in developing a more innovative, efficient, and technology-driven electricity distribution system. Prepaid smart meters have been installed in around 16 million locations where applicable; these systems allow users to monitor their consumption in real time, offering enhanced transparency and revenue collection for the Distributed System Operators (DISCOMs). Under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), the Government of India has green-lighted the setup of another 20 million smart meters. Currently, around 40 percent have been put in place. The top priority for implementing prepaid smart meters is government facilities, commercial enterprises, industrial users, and high-load consumers, guaranteeing that the largest consumers are the first to shift to a responsible, data-driven metering system.
India's implementation of smart meters is expected to lead to significantly improved efficiency in the nation's electric power distribution networks by decreasing overall technical and commercial losses, enhancing remote meter reading capabilities, and providing better power-demand predictions for both consumers and utilities. For consumers, utilizing prepaid meters and smart metering improves the dependability of electricity services and minimizes disagreements regarding customer billing
