The European Union (EU) has sanctioned 102 more fishery establishments for the export of India's marine products, bringing the total of EU-approved Indian seafood export units to 604, the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) disclosed on September 11, 2025. This milestone is anticipated to enhance India’s standing in the European seafood market and reduce the effects of US tariffs. The approvals come after continuous discussions by Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Mr. Piyush Goyal and high-ranking ministry officials with EU counterparts, in conjunction with collaborative efforts by MPEDA and the Export Inspection Council (EIC) to improve food safety standards throughout the seafood value chain. MPEDA Chairman Mr. D V Swamy stated that adding more units gives exporters chances to enhance product quality, diversify their offerings, and grow in important EU markets like Belgium, Spain, and Italy. The forthcoming India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade Agreement, starting on October 1, 2025, will enhance market access to EFTA nations, such as Norway and Switzerland. India exported 16,98,170 metric tonnes of seafood valued at Rs. 62,408 crore (US$ 7.45 billion) in FY25, with frozen shrimp continuing as the top export in both volume and value. Exports destined for the EU totaled 2,15,080 metric tonnes valued at Rs. 9,430 crore (US$ 1,125.6 million), driven by frozen shrimp, cuttlefish, and squid. MPEDA’s efforts, such as Good Management Practices, traceability protocols, Pre-Harvest Testing, and compliance with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) standards, have strengthened India's food safety reputation. Key industry figures, such as Managing Director of Mayank Aquaculture Private Limited, Dr. Manoj Sharma, and Chairman of Island Exports, Mr. Santhosh Prabhu, praised the approvals, highlighting that they will greatly enhance India's seafood exports to Europe and generate prospects for value-added products
