The government anticipates that rooftop solar installations will exceed four million by March 2026, bolstered by the new utility-led aggregation framework of the Prime Minister Surya Ghar Mut Bijli Yojana. This is a component of the larger goal of setting up 10 million rooftop solar units by March 2027, with 1.7 million homes having already embraced the systems. Authorities believe that the aggregation model could contribute approximately one million installations by allowing distribution firms to combine demand and execute rooftop solar initiatives for households. The model aims to simplify approval processes, enhance vendor responsibility, and lower expenses for consumers. The program offers as much as 300 units of complimentary electricity monthly, in addition to direct subsidies and loans without collateral for installation. With an expenditure of Rs. 75,021 crore (US$ 8.6 billion) will be implemented via power distribution firms and suppliers until 2026-27. Industry specialists emphasize that increasing rooftop solar is vital for achieving clean energy targets, reducing the financial strain on distribution firms, and ensuring households have dependable, affordable electricity. A collaborative study conducted by JMK Research and the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis highlighted that expanding the decentralized energy market, with rooftop solar being a key component, will be essential for enhancing India’s energy security and promoting its journey toward energy independence.
