The government engages in extensive discussions regarding Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) to safeguard the domestic industry.

The Union Minister of Commerce & Industry, Mr. Piyush Goyal, announced on Monday that the government carries out comprehensive stakeholder consultations prior to finalizing any Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), ensuring that the offensive and defensive interests of Indian industries are taken into account. At an event celebrating the third anniversary of Vanijya Bhawan, he underlined that FTAs are sought with trading partners whose economies enhance, rather than conflict with, India's. He reiterated that future FTAs will continue to focus on national and public interests, with industry concerns thoroughly evaluated during the negotiation process. Reflecting on the importance of Vanijya Bhawan, he characterized it as a representation of modern, efficient, and cohesive governance, symbolizing the dynamic changes in India’s commerce and industry realm over the past 11 years. He pointed out the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) as a crucial development in public procurement, allowing wider involvement from entrepreneurs throughout India, including those from remote areas. E-commerce, he stated, has emerged as a significant tool for price discovery and the integration of local producers into national supply chains. Additionally, he emphasized the need for shared responsibility within the ministry, advocating for enhanced internal efficiencies—including a 50% reduction in housekeeping staff by the same time next year as part of a comprehensive effort for operational excellence.
