The installed electricity generation capacity of NTPC Group has surpassed the 90 GW mark with the launch of commercial operations at the second phase of the Khavda Solar Energy Project in Gujarat. NTPC Green Energy Ltd (NGEL), via its wholly owned subsidiary NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd (NREL), commenced commercial operations of a supplementary 110.25 megawatt (MW) solar capacity at the Khavda-I Solar PV Project on May 22, 2026. With this recent enhancement, the overall installed and operational power generation capacity of the NTPC Group has achieved 90,025 MW, solidifying its status as India’s largest integrated power utility. The increase in capacity signifies yet another important milestone in India's shift towards clean energy and highlights the company's increasing emphasis on renewable energy production. The Khavda Renewable Energy Park, currently under development in the Kutch region of Gujarat, is anticipated to become one of the largest renewable energy parks globally once completed. NTPC has been quickly enhancing its renewable energy portfolio by investing in solar, wind, pumped hydro storage, and green hydrogen initiatives as part of its enduring sustainability plan. The company aims to reach 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 and is proactively increasing operations via NGEL and NREL to aid India’s net-zero emissions goals. The government's initiative for renewable energy, growing investments in eco-friendly infrastructure, and a surge in electricity demand are fueling significant capacity expansions throughout the industry. Major solar farms like Khavda are anticipated to boost local manufacturing, improve energy security, and lessen reliance on fossil fuels. The recent increase in capacity underscores the crucial role of public sector enterprises in advancing India’s shift toward sustainable and low-carbon energy systems, while promoting long-term industrial growth and infrastructure development nationwide.
