The Ministry of Mines announced on August 8, 2025, that the Government of India plans to support the submission of 1,000 patents in the essential minerals sector by 2030–31 through the National Critical Mineral Mission (NCMM). Authorized by the Union Cabinet in January 2025, the NCMM aims to develop self-sufficiency in vital minerals necessary for green energy and key sectors. The program entails monitoring and assisting patents throughout the mineral value chain, encompassing exploration, extraction, processing, and recycling. During May and June 2025, 62 patent applications concerning essential minerals were submitted, and 10 patents were awarded. These innovations related to lithium, nickel, titanium, tungsten, and vanadium are essential for clean energy, electronics, and strategic technologies. Recent instances involve patents for sodium-ion batteries, tungsten–polymer composites, and metal oxide nanoparticles infused with rare earth elements like ytterbium.
