The sales of automobiles in India increased by 5% in May, driven by demand from weddings and rural areas.

Automobile retail sales in India saw a 5% rise in May compared to the same month last year, fueled by factors like weddings, harvest activities, and demand from rural areas, as reported by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Sales of construction equipment vehicles dropped by 6.3%, and commercial vehicle (CV) sales fell by 3.7%. FADA predicts that ongoing global supply chain challenges, including the limited availability of rare earth elements vital for electric vehicle parts and geopolitical issues, may continue to negatively impact urban consumer sentiment in June. Sales of two-wheelers (2W) rose by 7.3%, while three-wheelers increased by 6.2%, and tractor sales grew by 2.7% in May. Mr. CS Vigneshwar, President of FADA, noted that financing issues in the economy segment limited the full potential growth of 2W sales. Nevertheless, rural and semi-urban markets showed strength due to auspicious marriage dates, a robust harvest, and demand ahead of the monsoon season. Passenger vehicle (PV) sales experienced a contraction of 3.1% year-on-year and 13.6% month-on-month, as inventory levels increased to 52-53 days from about 50 days. Maruti Suzuki's sales decreased by 5%, Hyundai Motors experienced a decline of approximately 16%, and Tata Motors fell by around 13%, while Mahindra and Mahindra, now the second largest automaker in India by sales, surged by 26% in May. CV sales fell by 3.71% year-on-year and 11.25% month-on-month amidst subdued freight cycles, tight cash flow, and negative geopolitical sentiment. FADA remains cautious regarding demand in June, observing that rural activity influenced by the monsoon and upcoming festivals should support 2W sales. However, ongoing financing issues and selective price adjustments from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) may restrain additional growth.
