The toy standards in India surpass international benchmarks, enhancing export opportunities, according to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

According to a senior official from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Indian toy quality standards exceed global norms, helping local manufacturers boost their export potential. The BIS has established thorough Indian standards that address physical, chemical, and electrical safety for toys, which align with international criteria set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). To implement these standards, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) launched the Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020, which became effective on January 1, 2021. This order requires that all toys sold in India, regardless of whether they are made locally or imported, meet seven designated Indian standards and carry the Indian Standards Institution (ISI) mark under a valid BIS license. The manufacturing, importing, or selling of toys that do not comply with these regulations is banned. Mr. Adbhut Singh, who serves as Scientist E and Director at the Western Regional Office Laboratory (WROL), BIS Mumbai, stated that Indian standards are specially designed to suit local climatic conditions and domestic requirements, thereby enhancing both local and global sales of Indian toys. At present, there are 1,640 toy manufacturers certified by BIS, with 1,165 licenses for non-electronic toys and 475 for electronic ones. Mr. Moiz Gabajiwala, CEO of Zephyr Toymakers Pvt Ltd, noted that BIS standards have promoted innovation and created equitable competition, allowing the company to raise its turnover to Rs. 25 crore (US$ 2.9 million) in FY25, with a goal of 20% growth in FY26. Sourcing 99% of its raw materials from domestic suppliers, Zephyr manufactures between 100,000 and 150,000 toys each month across 15 categories.
