TRAI Telecom Update: Subscriber Growth & M2M Surge
According to data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), India's total telephone subscriber base grew 0.46% month-on-month in July 2026, rising from 1,348.08 million to 1,354.28 million and driving overall tele-density up to 94.68%. On the date of peak Visitor Location Register (VLR), active mobile subscribers reached 1,204.01 million, while Mobile Number Portability (MNP) activity remained high with 15.98 million requests submitted during the month. Growth was reflected across both segments: wireless connections expanded to 1,306.27 million, while wireline subscriptions rose to 48.01 million. Significant regional disparities in connectivity persist, with urban tele-density reaching 154.12% compared to 61.05% in rural areas, while the Delhi Licensed Service Area (LSA) recorded the highest overall tele-density at 368.33% and Bihar LSA recorded the lowest at 64.19%.
Broadband connectivity continued its steady expansion, with total subscribers increasing 0.64% month-on-month to reach 1,094.48 million. Market concentration remained high, as the top five service providers collectively controlled 98.59% of the broadband segment; Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. maintained its market lead with 535.12 million subscribers, followed by Bharti Airtel Ltd. with 384.23 million. Simultaneously, Machine-to-Machine (M2M) cellular mobile connections expanded to 137.70 million, driven predominantly by Bharti Airtel Limited, which commanded a market-leading 61.33% share in the M2M space.
