Union Railway Minister Mr Ashwini Vaishnaw has introduced five significant reforms as part of the bold ‘52 Reforms in 52 Weeks’ program designed to improve efficiency, passenger comfort, and operational effectiveness of Indian Railways. The recently implemented reforms centre on ticket cancellation and refund policies, flexibility in boarding locations, better logistics for salt and car transport, and improved construction standards. In line with passenger-focused initiatives, a streamlined cancellation policy has been implemented, which involves charging only a small flat fee for cancellations occurring over 72 hours before departure. For cancellations made 72 to 24 hours in advance, 25% of the fare will be withheld, whereas a 50% refund applies for cancellations that occur within 24 to 8 hours. Cancellations made within eight hours of departure will not receive a refund. Moreover, travellers are now able to cancel counter tickets at any railway station nationwide. Enhancing passenger flexibility, the boarding station can now be altered up to 30 minutes before train departure, in contrast to previous limitations related to chart preparation. Reforms focused on salt and car transportation in the freight sector seek to enhance logistics and boost efficiency in cargo management. The initiative focuses on enhancing construction quality in railway infrastructure projects, indicating a wider movement towards modernisation and safety. These changes are integral to a broader systematic initiative aimed at implementing one reform every week, with a focus on enhancing governance, integrating technology, and improving service delivery throughout the railway system. The initiative emphasises the government's commitment to evolving railways into a more user-friendly, efficient, and internationally competitive transportation system.
