Axis Bank’s 38% profit growth hides a sequential slowdown

Axis Bank Limited (NSE: AXISBANK) reported Q2 FY27 net profit of ₹7,003 crore, up 38% year-on-year, but fell short of market expectations. Its shares dropped as much as 5% on 19 October. What happened? Net interest income grew 12% year-on-year to ₹15,371 crore, while advances increased 23%. Asset quality also improved, with gross NPAs declining to 1.16%. However, operating profit fell 5% quarter-on-quarter, and operating expenses rose 11% sequentially. Treasury income also faced pressure from higher bond yields and rupee volatility. My analysis The headline profit growth looks strong, but the market is looking beyond the year-on-year comparison. The key question is whether Axis can convert strong loan growth into sustainable operating-profit growth without a disproportionate increase in costs. Improving asset quality provides support, but margin stability and operating leverage need to improve for the earnings momentum to strengthen. What to watch next Track the net interest margin, currently at 3.36%, alongside operating costs and the deployment of foreign-currency deposits. The next quarter should offer a clearer indication of whether margin pressure is temporary. Stance: Neutral until sequential profitability improves. Strong loan growth is encouraging, but the next leg of the story depends on earnings quality, not just headline profit growth
