Indian IT stocks post their strongest weekly rally in 18 yrs

The Nifty IT index gained 11.7% during the week ended October 16, 2026, its strongest weekly performance in 18 years. The Nifty 50 rose 2.8% over the same week, with IT stocks leading the broader market recovery. The rally followed a series of quarterly results that were better than feared, particularly from Tech Mahindra, Tata Consultancy Services and HCL Technologies. Investors also reassessed IT valuations following a period of weakness linked to concerns about global technology spending and AI-driven disruption. However, I would distinguish between a sharp recovery in share prices and a confirmed recovery in business demand. Tech Mahindra reported 15.6% year-on-year revenue growth and a 25.4% increase in deal wins. HCL Technologies raised the lower end of its FY27 revenue growth guidance. These are encouraging signs. But the picture is not uniform across the sector. Wipro's deal bookings fell 45% year-on-year to $2.6 billion, and its Q3 revenue guidance indicated a range from a 1.5% decline to 0.5% growth in constant currency terms. LTM also reported a sequential decline in deal inflows. This divergence matters. The market may be pricing in an improvement in demand before it becomes visible across the entire industry. AI adds another layer of uncertainty. Demand for AI implementation and transformation services can create new revenue opportunities, but productivity improvements may also reduce the number of billable hours required for traditional services. The long-term winners will be companies that convert AI adoption into profitable revenue growth. My view: The rally improves sentiment and suggests that investors are becoming more comfortable with IT valuations. However, I would not treat one strong week as proof that the sector has entered a sustained growth cycle. Deal wins, revenue conversion and FY27 guidance remain more important than short-term share-price momentum.
