SBI's Q2 profit growth includes a large one-off gain

State Bank of India (NSE: SBIN) reported standalone Q2 FY27 net profit of ₹23,038 crore, up 14.3% year on year. The result includes a one-time pre-tax gain of ₹7,288 crore from the sale of a stake in SBI Funds Management. What happened For the quarter ended September 30, 2026, SBI's net interest income increased 14.7% to ₹49,143 crore. Domestic net interest margin improved 11 basis points sequentially to 3.11%. Advances grew approximately 17.8%, while deposits increased 12.3%. Gross NPA declined to 1.39% from 1.47% in the previous quarter. Why it matters The underlying operating picture is more moderate than the headline profit growth suggests. Excluding the exceptional stake-sale gain, profit before tax increased only 3.7% year on year. Operating profit before provisions also declined 1.4%. The positives are stronger net interest income, improving margins and better asset quality. The key question is whether these trends can sustain earnings growth without support from exceptional income. What to watch next The next quarter's domestic NIM and deposit costs will be important. Management has indicated an ambition to maintain margins around 3% or higher. Also track credit growth, fresh slippages and operating expenses. Stance: Fundamentally constructive on core lending and asset-quality trends, but headline Q2 profit growth overstates the improvement in recurring earnings. Focus on operating performance rather than the reported PAT growth rate.
