HDFC Bank Faces a Crucial Growth and Margin Test

HDFCBANK
is entering an important phase as it prepares for a leadership transition, and I feel the bigger story here is not just about who becomes the next CEO. The real challenge will be how the bank brings back stronger growth without compromising profitability. One area I would closely track is the loan-to-deposit ratio. The bank needs to grow its loan book, but doing that aggressively through expensive funding can put further pressure on margins. Rebuilding retail deposits and CASA therefore becomes equally important. There is also pressure on the income side. Core income as a percentage of assets declined to 2.18% in the June quarter from 2.40% a year earlier. With operating expenses rising only around 4%, I feel the bigger challenge now is improving revenue productivity rather than simply controlling costs. Investor confidence is another factor. The stock has fallen sharply this year and recently touched a fresh 52-week low. Concerns around the pace of benefits from the HDFC merger, governance issues and other developments have added to the pressure. For me, the next phase of HDFC Bank will be about finding the right balance—faster loan growth, stronger deposits and recovery in margins without taking unnecessary balance-sheet risks. The franchise remains large, but execution from here will matter more than size alone.
