Power Grid acquires 6 GW Barmer transmission SPV

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (NSE: POWERGRID) has acquired 100% of Barmer HVDC Power Transmission Limited for about ₹18.98 crore. The SPV will develop a 6,000 MW interstate transmission system for evacuating renewable power from Rajasthan. Key details • The project was awarded through the Tariff Based Competitive Bidding route. • It includes ±800 kV HVDC terminals at Barmer-II in Rajasthan and South Kalamb in Maharashtra. • The project also includes an approximately 1,000 km HVDC transmission line passing through Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra. • POWERGRID will develop the project on a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer basis. • The acquired SPV has not yet started commercial operations. My view The ₹18.98 crore acquisition value is not the main point here. The real significance is the scale of the transmission asset POWERGRID will build through the SPV. A 6 GW renewable evacuation project adds another large interstate transmission opportunity to its pipeline. The financial impact, however, will depend on project capex, commissioning timelines and the returns allowed under the tariff structure. What I’m watching next I will watch for the investment approval, project cost, targeted commissioning timeline and subsequent construction progress. Stance: Positive from a long-term transmission pipeline perspective, but project economics and execution remain the key factors.
