Balrampur Chini Mills Gets ₹75 Crore BioE3 Grant

BALRAMCHIN
r Chini Mills (BALRAMCHIN) is in focus after receiving a ₹75 crore grant from the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) under the Department of Biotechnology's BioE3 initiative. Where The Money Goes The grant will support a 100-tonne-per-annum pilot-scale R&D facility for Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) co-polymers at the company's Kumbhi manufacturing complex in Uttar Pradesh. Why PLA Matters PLA is a bio-based polymer that can be used in biodegradable and sustainable material applications. The R&D facility is intended to develop specialised PLA grades and co-polymers for higher-value applications and generate the process know-how required for eventual commercial-scale production. The R&D facility is being established alongside Balrampur Chini Mills' planned 80,000 TPA integrated commercial PLA manufacturing facility at Kumbhi. This gives the project both a research component and a proposed large-scale manufacturing component. **Why This Is Strategically Important** The initiative represents an attempt to diversify beyond the company's traditional sugar, distillery and power businesses into bio-based materials. The R&D facility is expected to support product development, customer validation and eventual technology scale-up. **Market Reaction** Balrampur Chini Mills shares gained around 4% on September 25 after the grant announcement, closing at ₹686. **What To Watch** The key factors will be the progress of the R&D facility, commissioning of the commercial PLA project, customer adoption and the eventual contribution of the new business to earnings. This update is based on company and government disclosures. It is not investment advice.
