HDFC leadership clarity is here. Now earnings have to follow

HDFC Bank Limited

HDFCBANK
has removed one of its biggest recent uncertainties. Anup Bagchi has been appointed Managing Director and CEO, taking charge from October 27 for a three-year term. At the same time, the bank's September business numbers show a healthier balance-sheet trend. September snapshot Gross advances increased 16.3% year on year to ₹32.20 lakh crore. Deposits grew faster, up 18.8% to ₹33.28 lakh crore. That deposit growth is encouraging because the bank has spent considerable time trying to improve its funding position. But there is a detail worth noticing. Time deposits grew 22.8%, while CASA deposits increased only 10.8%. So the headline deposit number looks stronger than the low-cost funding number. Why the next result matters The market does not need another strong loan-growth headline. It needs evidence that growth can translate into better margins, profitability and return ratios. Bagchi's appointment gives management a clear runway, but operational changes will take time. My reading The ingredients for a recovery are beginning to appear: leadership uncertainty has reduced, deposits are growing strongly and advances are back in double digits. The missing piece is earnings quality. I would rather wait for the Q2 numbers than assume that the business turnaround is already complete. Key indicators:NIM, CASA, credit costs, ROA and management commentary on FY27 growth. View: Constructive, but not aggressive. HDFC Bank needs to prove that balance-sheet growth is becoming earnings growth. Disclosure: Research view only. I do not hold HDFC Bank Limited. Investors should independently verify current prices, filings and risk factors before acting. Not investment advice.
