GRSE approves ₹2,896 crore shipyard investment
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (NSE: GRSE) has approved a ₹2,896 crore capital outlay for a greenfield shipyard at Raichak, West Bengal. The facility is intended to expand GRSE’s naval and commercial shipbuilding capacity.
The investment matters because capacity can become a constraint if order opportunities continue to expand. GRSE has also been adding facilities in West Bengal, with the broader expansion programme aimed at increasing shipbuilding and ship-repair capabilities.
My view: The capex increases long-term capacity, but it also creates execution and capital-allocation requirements. The market will need evidence that additional capacity translates into higher order execution and acceptable returns. GRSE’s Q1 FY27 revenue rose 38% year on year to ₹1,815 crore, while net profit increased 44% to ₹173 crore.
What to watch next: Capex execution, capacity utilisation and new order wins.
