Canara Bank faces margin and ECL provisioning concerns

CANBK
faced selling pressure on October 15, 2026, with its share price falling over 6% intraday despite steady headline operational performance. Investor concerns centred on future provisioning costs, deposit composition and treasury income. The key overhang is an estimated Expected Credit Loss (ECL) provisioning requirement of ₹12,000 crore to ₹15,000 crore. The eventual impact will depend on the final provisioning framework, implementation timeline and the bank’s internal risk models. The CASA ratio remained at 29%, below management’s guided range of 30% to 32%, potentially increasing reliance on relatively expensive funding sources. Higher FCNR(B) deposits, reportedly carrying spreads of only 40 to 50 basis points, also weighed on net interest margin performance. Meanwhile, rising benchmark bond yields pressured treasury operations, leading to segment losses compared with profits in the year-ago period. Management also indicated that recent UPI Merchant Discount Rate policy changes are unlikely to provide a meaningful near-term earnings boost. My View: The near-term outlook is cautious. Potential ECL provisioning creates uncertainty around future profitability, while the CASA shortfall and treasury losses add pressure. The final impact will depend on actual provisioning requirements, margin trends and deposit mobilisation. What to watch: ECL provisioning guidelines and implementation, CASA recovery towards 30% to 32%, net interest margin trends, treasury performance and credit costs. Stance: CANBK – NEGATIVE (7/10)
