Cabinet Clears ₹1,570 Crore Ship Repair Facility at Vadinar

In a significant boost to India’s maritime infrastructure, the Union Cabinet chaired by Narendra Modi has approved the development of a ship repair facility at Vadinar with an estimated investment of ₹1,570 crore. The project will be jointly implemented by Deendayal Port Authority and Cochin Shipyard Limited, combining port infrastructure expertise with shipbuilding and repair capabilities. The initiative aims to strengthen India’s ship repair capacity and reduce dependence on foreign facilities, particularly in regions such as the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Vadinar’s strategic coastal location near major international shipping routes makes it an ideal site for such a facility. The proposed yard is expected to handle a wide range of repair and maintenance work for commercial vessels, improving turnaround time and reducing costs for Indian shipping companies. It also aligns with the government’s broader maritime vision under the Sagarmala Programme, which focuses on port-led development and logistics efficiency. Beyond infrastructure development, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities and boost economic activity in the region. Overall, the move marks a key step toward positioning India as a competitive hub in the global ship repair and maritime services sector.
