Global Shifts, Domestic Moves: Key Updates and Impact on India

The U.S. government has reopened after a 43-day shutdown that stalled economic data, halted federal pay, and strained services. Political disagreements remain, keeping policy uncertainty elevated. The White House warned the October jobs report may be incomplete due to data gaps, while U.S. retail job postings fell 16% YoY, reflecting weak festive hiring. To ease food inflation, the U.S. plans tariff exemptions on select imported items. In China, new bank loans plunged to 220 bn yuan in October from 1.29 tn in September, signalling weak credit appetite and a slowing economy. In India, a five-year anti-dumping duty on Vietnamese hot-rolled steel aims to protect domestic producers. Chhattisgarh recorded its first major copper-concentrate export to China via the Nava Raipur logistics park. DPIIT received 13 applications under the white-goods PLI scheme, with ₹1,914 crore proposed investments in AC components. The government also set aside ₹2,000 crore this fiscal for the ₹20,000 crore export credit guarantee scheme, valid till March 2026 or until ₹72,000 crore of guarantees are issued. Impact on India: U.S. data delays may create short-term volatility in EM flows. Weak U.S. consumption could soften demand for Indian apparel and specialty exports. Tariff exemptions may ease global food-input prices, lowering India’s import costs. China’s credit slowdown may push commodity prices lower—positive for inflation but mixed for exporters. Domestically, steel duties strengthen local producers; the PLI scheme boosts manufacturing; and the export guarantee scheme supports MSME liquidity. Related stocks:
