Healthcare Stocks Fall: What Triggered the Sell-Off?

Indian healthcare stocks witnessed sharp selling on September 30, with major hospital names falling over 5%. Fortis Healthcare declined 6.33%, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise fell 5.70% and Max Healthcare Institute dropped 5.33%. The Nifty Healthcare Index also declined 2.57% to 16,137.75. The immediate trigger was the Supreme Court's scrutiny of medicine pricing at private hospitals. During a hearing on September 29, the court questioned the wide gap between the price paid by retailers and the MRP charged to patients. A cancer drug example highlighted a retailer price of around ₹2,700 versus an MRP of ₹27,000. The court also asked why a uniform 16% markup should not apply to medicines and medical devices. It raised concerns about patients being required to purchase medicines through hospital-linked pharmacies. However, this is not a final regulatory cap yet. The matter will be heard again on October 12. From an investor perspective, the concern is whether any future regulation could affect pharmacy-related margins and revenue streams of hospital companies. That uncertainty appears to have triggered broad-based selling rather than company-specific bad news. Technically, the Nifty Healthcare Index has weakened sharply, with RSI falling toward 37 and MACD momentum turning negative. However, the index remains above its major medium- and long-term moving averages. My sector view: The near-term outlook has turned cautious. I would watch the 16,000–15,600 zone closely. Sustaining this area could indicate that the current fall is a correction within the broader trend, while a decisive breakdown could increase selling pressure. On the upside, 16,500–16,800 remains an important recovery zone. Disclosure: I or my family members do not have any position in the stocks discussed above.
