India’s Oil Dependency Is Changing — But Not the Way You Think

We often hear that India is heavily dependent on oil imports — which is true. But what’s changing quietly is how that dependency is managed. A few years ago, India was largely dependent on Middle East suppliers like Saudi Arabia and Iraq. Today, the sourcing basket is much wider — including countries like United States and Russia. So the dependency hasn’t disappeared — it has spread out. That’s an important difference. At the same time, India has built some cushion. Strategic reserves under Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited and refining flexibility through companies like Reliance Industries mean we’re not stuck with one type of crude or one supplier anymore. There’s also a gradual shift happening on the demand side. Initiatives like National Solar Mission and FAME India Scheme are slowly reducing how much oil is needed per unit of growth. But let’s not get carried away. A large portion of global oil still passes through the Strait of Hormuz. And pricing is still driven by global benchmarks like Brent Crude. Which means — even if we buy from 40 countries, we can’t escape global price shocks. My take: India is not becoming oil-independent anytime soon. But it is becoming less fragile. And in today’s world, that matters more than anything.
