Macro & Trade Developments — Impact on India

India’s merchandise trade deficit widened to $25.04 bn in December, driven by higher crude oil, electronics, and capital goods imports. While this may pressure the current account deficit (CAD) in the near term, the nature of imports signals investment-led demand revival, a positive medium-term growth indicator. Exports grew 1.87% YoY, suggesting September marked the export cycle trough. Export momentum improved in U.S. markets during Q4, with April–December exports up 9.75% YoY, while non-U.S. markets remained resilient, reducing concentration risk and supporting manufacturing employment. India–China trade reached a record $155.62 bn, with exports to China rising $5.5 bn YoY, though the deficit widened to $116.12 bn. This highlights opportunities for select exporters but reinforces the urgency of domestic manufacturing and supply-chain diversification. Crude sourcing is shifting away from discounted Russian oil toward costlier alternatives, posing inflation and CAD risks if global oil prices stay firm. Global energy uncertainties add to upside risks. Progress on the India–EU Free Trade Agreement, with most chapters finalised, is a structural positive for exports, FDI, and supply-chain integration across engineering, pharma, autos, and textiles. Domestically, unemployment at 4.8% alongside record workforce participation reflects healthy labour absorption, supporting consumption. WPI inflation at 0.83% signals pricing normalisation, keeping RBI cautious but not restrictive. Globally, renewed trade frictions, U.S. inflation stickiness, and China’s policy easing create mixed signals—raising volatility but also opening trade diversion opportunities for Indian exporters.
