🔍 Recent Financial & Operational Highlights
In the quarter ending March 2025, BHSL’s net profit rose sharply by ~143%, reaching around ₹220 crore, even though sales fell ~17% compared to the same quarter last year.
For the full year ended March 2025, the company still reported a small net loss (~₹23–₹25 crore), though it’s narrower than losses in previous years. Sales for the year declined ~9%.
Operating margins and profit before depreciation & interest (PBDIT) improved, showing strength in operations despite weak top-line figures.
⚠️ Challenges & Risks
The company has struggled with high debt levels and interest obligations. It faced a possible default situation with lenders due to obligations tied to optionally convertible debentures (OCDs).
Liquidity is under strain — free cash is limited, which makes servicing debt and meeting dues challenging.
Another risk is delayed or pending payments to sugarcane farmers; there are arrears which can create operational and reputational issues.
Sales declined, partly because of changing sugar supply, pricing pressures, and possibly under-utilization of crushing capacity.
🏭 Business & Policy Context
BHSL operates 14 sugar mills in Uttar Pradesh, with large sugarcane crushing capacity; it also has ethanol distilleries and power generation (cogeneration) facilities.
Government policy changes are relevant: ethanol blending targets, minimum selling price (MSP) for sugar, sugar-industry promotion policies, and governmental support in pricing can play a big role in BHSL’s prospects.
With ethanol production gaining priority in recent policy shifts, there’s potential upside for BHSL if they can scale that part of business profitably.
