# Pfizer: Why the Cipla partnership matters
Pfizer Limited has partnered with Cipla to expand the reach of four established brands in India. The deal shows how Pfizer is using a stronger distribution network while retaining manufacturing and supply responsibilities.
Under the agreement, Cipla gets exclusive marketing and distribution rights for Corex Dx, Corex LS, Dolonex and Neksium in India. Pfizer continues to manufacture, source and supply the medicines.
This is an interesting business-model change.
Pfizer already has more than 150 products across 16 therapeutic areas in India, with annual sales of over ₹2,000 crore. Its portfolio includes established brands such as Prevenar 13, Corex, Dolonex, Becosules and Folvite.
The partnership allows Pfizer to use Cipla's distribution reach without transferring the manufacturing and supply side of the business.
For an established-brand portfolio, distribution reach can be important because wider availability can directly influence prescription and retail sales.
Pfizer has also been making organisational changes across its business, including a new leadership structure for vaccines and other therapy areas.
**My view:** The Cipla partnership is more interesting as a strategy change than as a one-time corporate announcement. The key question is whether better distribution can revive growth from established brands while Pfizer continues building its higher-value portfolio
I would watch sales growth of the partnered brands, Pfizer's product mix and whether similar partnerships are used for other mature brands.
**What I'm watching:** revenue growth, established-brand performance, product mix, new partnerships and margins.
**Stance:** The partnership should be judged by the incremental sales and profitability it creates, rather than simply the size of the brand portfolio covered.
