# PVR INOX: Can asset-light expansion improve returns? PVR INOX Limited is expanding its screen network while reducing the capital required for each new cinema. The company plans 100–110 new screens in FY27, with a greater focus on FOCO and asset-light formats. This is important because cinema expansion has traditionally required significant spending on property, interiors and equipment. Under asset-light and FOCO models, much of the investment is funded by the developer or franchise partner, while PVR INOX operate the cinema. The opportunity is particularly large outside major metros. PVR INOX has identified smaller cities where cinema penetration remains low and is developing its Smart Screen format for these markets. The economics are interesting. A traditional company-owned screen can generate more revenue, but it also carries higher fixed costs and capital requirements. An asset-light screen may generate lower revenue per screen, but requires substantially less capital. That can improve returns if the company can maintain healthy occupancy and monetisation. Premiumisation is another part of the strategy. Premium formats account for roughly 16% of PVR INOX's screen base and generate higher ticket prices and occupancy than standard screens. **My view:** The key PVR INOX story is shifting from simply adding screens to adding screens more efficiently.
