Key Figures & Capacity
The annual steel production is in the tens of millions of tonnes, making it one of the major steel makers in India (in the top tier along with private companies).
It has a large workforce, large installed capacity, and often works at high utilisation rates (sometimes more than 100% when output exceeds nominal capacity).
It possesses a large number of patents; a significant share are active; R&D is part of its strategy.
Recent Performance & Actions
In recent quarters, SAIL has had mixed results: some periods of rising profit (helped by lower input costs, strong domestic demand) and other periods of decline (due to soft steel prices, weak demand, pressure from cheaper imports).
For example, in one recent fiscal year its net profit dropped (~20-25%) compared to the prior year.
In one quarter, there was a strong profit rise year-over-year, aided by cost reductions and improved demand.
Strategy & Developments
SAIL is pushing towards greener steel manufacturing: exploring hydrogen-based steelmaking trials, carbon capture and storage, biochar injection, use of renewable energy, etc.
The company has plans to significantly increase capacity over the coming years. One aim mentioned is to reach ~35 million tonnes by around 2030-31.
Capital expenditure is increasing: it is planning higher spending in upcoming years to upgrade/de-bottleneck existing plants, expand capacity at specific plants, etc.
SAIL is also expanding its export footprint: it has opened a representative office in Dubai to tap into Middle East/MENA markets.
