How do inflation rates impact the purchasing power of consumers?

Inflation rates have a direct impact on the purchasing power of consumers. When inflation rises, the general price level of goods and services increases, meaning that the same amount of money buys fewer products. As a result, consumers can afford less with the same income. For example, if inflation is at 5%, a product that costs $100 today will cost $105 in the next year, reducing the value of money over time. This can lead to a decrease in the standard of living, especially for individuals with fixed incomes. If wages do not increase at the same rate as inflation, consumers may have to make tough choices about what they can afford, prioritizing essentials over non-essential items. In the long term, high inflation can erode savings and lead to a shift in consumer behavior, as people may start spending more on immediate needs rather than long-term investments.
