How do interest rate changes impact stock markets, and what strategies can investors use to navigate these fluctuations?

Interest rate changes impact stock markets by influencing borrowing costs, consumer spending, and business profitability. When interest rates rise, borrowing becomes more expensive, which can lead to reduced consumer spending and lower business investments, potentially causing stock prices to fall. Higher rates also make fixed-income investments more attractive, drawing money away from equities. Conversely, when interest rates are lowered, borrowing costs decrease, stimulating economic activity and often boosting stock prices. To navigate these fluctuations, investors can consider diversifying their portfolios to include both interest-sensitive and growth-oriented assets. During periods of rising rates, focusing on sectors like financials (which may benefit from higher rates) or defensive stocks (such as utilities) can provide stability. On the other hand, in a low-interest-rate environment, growth stocks and high-dividend-paying stocks may outperform. Investors may also use fixed-income securities or inflation-protected investments as a hedge against interest rate changes.
