BPCL and Coal India Form JV for Coal Gasification Project in Maharashtra
Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Coal India Limited (CIL) have formed a strategic joint venture to develop a coal gasification project in Maharashtra, marking a significant step toward clean coal technology and energy diversification. The partnership, now approved by regulators, will be led by BPCL as the lead partner, with CIL holding a 51% stake and BPCL holding 49%.
The project aims to convert coal into synthesis gas (syngas) through advanced gasification technology, which can further be processed into cleaner fuels, fertilizers, and chemicals—offering higher efficiency and lower emissions than traditional coal use.
This initiative aligns with India’s goals of energy security and value addition to domestic coal resources. It enables CIL to move up the value chain while allowing BPCL to expand beyond refining into sustainable fuel and chemical production.
By combining CIL’s coal reserves with BPCL’s processing expertise, the JV creates a vertically integrated model, positioning both PSUs at the forefront of India’s alternative energy transition. The project underscores growing synergy between India’s oil & gas and coal sectors in building a self-reliant, cleaner energy future.
