Ola Electric’s Indigenous 4680 Bharat Cell Gets ARAI Certification

Ola Electric, led by Bhavish Aggarwal, has become the first Indian EV maker to secure ARAI certification for in-house developed battery packs—the 5.2 kWh 4680 Bharat Cell. The batteries comply with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ AIS-156 Amendment 4 safety standards, following rigorous testing for water immersion, vibration, thermal shock, and electrical reliability. The certified battery will debut on the Ola S1 Pro+, marking a major leap in India’s EV self-reliance. The company claims this milestone will enhance vehicle range, performance, and cost efficiency, while reducing dependence on global supply chains as its Gigafactory scales up production. This move marks Ola’s shift from third-party cells to vertical integration, strengthening localisation in EV manufacturing. Despite the technological breakthrough, Ola Electric’s share price has fallen 40% in 2025, and its Q1 FY26 net loss widened to ₹428 crore (from ₹347 crore). Investors await Q2 results to assess the financial impact of its deepening in-house capabilities.
