🏭 Coal India Limited Gears Up for Summer Surge in Coal Demand

India’s coal giant **Coal India Limited (CIL)** has reaffirmed its readiness to tackle the anticipated spike in power demand during the upcoming summer months. As electricity consumption has started rising since January, the company has moved proactively to ensure there is no shortage of domestic coal supply. ### 🔎 Robust Three-Layer Coal Buffer CIL has strategically built a **three-tier buffer system** across the supply chain: 1. **Pithead Stock:** CIL’s subsidiaries are holding a massive **115 Million Tonnes (MTs)** of coal at pitheads (as of 26 February 2026). This figure is expected to increase further by the end of the financial year. 2. **Thermal Power Plant Stock:** Domestic coal-based power plants currently maintain nearly **55 MTs** of coal stock (as of 25 February 2026) — the **highest-ever level for this period**. 3. **Transit & In-Situ Availability:** * Around **5.5 MTs** of coal is available in transit (goods sheds, washeries, ports). * An additional **60.2 MTs** of in-situ exposed coal is ready for extraction at key mines contributing 90% of CIL’s annual output. 👉 **Total accessible coal availability stands at approximately 175.5 MTs**, creating strong operational assurance against any sudden demand spike. ### ⚡ Impact on Power Sector & Imports With summer approaching, power consumption is expected to rise sharply due to increased cooling demand. CIL’s strong inventory position not only ensures uninterrupted supply to thermal power plants but may also help **reduce coal imports**, especially at a time when **international coal prices are trending upward**. 📈 Strategic Significance The record-high coal inventory across the system signals: * Improved supply chain management * Stronger energy security * Reduced risk of power shortages * Potential savings on costly imports CIL’s preparedness sends a clear message to the market — **India’s energy backbone remains stable and well-stocked ahead of peak demand season.**
